About Mantinomia

Our texts

Mantinomia brings historical works together in a clear, accessible reading experience. Each text credits its translator and digital source in “About this text”, alongside notes on omissions or changes to the wording.

For readability, we may adjust paragraph breaks and spacing without changing the source wording or punctuation. We may also add researched speaker labels. These editorial additions are explained in “About this text”, with links to any sources consulted; the underlying source text and original passage references are preserved.

You can link to a whole text or an individual passage using its permanent link.

Author contributions use the same passage references. The author reviews the extracted text before publishing and retains their copyright. A contribution’s availability follows the author’s profile and work visibility settings, including at retained revision links.

Corrections and rights

If you notice an error or have a question about the rights to a text, email mantinomia@gmail.com. Include the page link and a brief explanation. For a rights claim, please also describe your relationship to the material.

Privacy

You can read public texts without an account. Mantinomia uses no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies. Historical catalogue searches run in your browser; searches for public profiles and author contributions are sent to our server to check current visibility.

If you choose to log in with Vipps, we request only your Vipps identifier to authenticate you. We do not request your name, email, phone number, address or national identity number. A necessary encrypted login cookie lasts up to ten minutes, and a necessary encrypted session cookie lasts up to eight hours or until you log out. We do not keep Vipps access tokens. Vipps processes your login under its own privacy terms.

Your profile stores the name, picture and bio you choose to add, your assigned manti username, and an identifier derived from your Vipps login in Supabase. Profiles and individual fields start private. You control the visibility of the whole profile, each field and each work. Hidden fields use the same placeholders as empty fields. “View as visitor” shows your public fields and works even while your whole profile is private. Pictures are cropped and resized, and embedded metadata is removed. Your profile remains after logout and is retained until you request deletion through the contact address below. Profile contents are not sent to the AI assistants.

Work uploads are currently available only to the platform owner. Original files, extracted text, processing decisions and reader revisions are stored in Supabase. The original file stays accessible only to its uploader. Extracted text and submission metadata are sent to OpenAI to screen for spam, abuse, suitability and extraction problems. Screening does not certify the truth of a work. Uncertain submissions require editorial review. Text becomes public only after the uploader reviews and publishes it, subject to their visibility settings. Upload progress may be remembered in your browser to resume an interrupted upload. Uploads are retained until deletion is requested.

Mantinomia AS is responsible for the personal information described here. Vercel hosts the website and processes technical information, such as your IP address, to deliver and secure it. If you email us, we use your message and contact details to respond; correspondence is handled through Gmail (Google).

If you ask Manti (an AI guide that answers questions about this website) a question, your question, the previous questions and answers in the same conversation and the address of the page you are on are sent to Anthropic, which generates the reply. Mantinomia does not store your questions. Technical logs record timing and usage, without your question or IP address. Conversations stay in your browser tab until you close it.

If you ask Plato-bot (an AI character that answers from Plato’s texts) a question, your question, the previous questions and answers in the same conversation, and the page you are reading are sent to Anthropic (which generates and checks answers), Voyage AI (which converts the question into a search vector) and Cohere (which ranks passages) to produce a reply. Mantinomia does not store your questions. Technical logs record the derived search queries, selected passages, timings and usage for up to the hosting-log retention period, without your IP address. Conversations stay in your browser tab until you close it. Avoid including personal information in questions. See Anthropic’s, Voyage AI’s and Cohere’s privacy policies.

If you send feedback through the feedback bubble, we store your title, message, current page URL and submission time in a private Supabase mailbox for review. No account or contact details are required. Avoid including sensitive personal information. We keep feedback for as long as needed to review and resolve it. To limit spam, we use a keyed hash of your IP address in a separate rate-limit record; it expires after an hour and is cleared on subsequent submissions. The mailbox does not store your IP address.

Legal basis

Our legitimate interests in delivering and securing the website and responding to enquiries (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)).

Hosting-log retention

Vercel retains technical and security data as needed to provide and protect its services, meet legal obligations and resolve disputes, as described in its privacy notice. Mantinomia does not maintain a separate visitor-log database.

Correspondence retention

We keep correspondence for as long as needed to respond and resolve the matter, and longer where necessary to meet legal obligations or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

These providers may process information outside the EEA, including in the United States. Their published transfer safeguards include the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses where applicable.
